Sedation Dentistry Q & A
What is sedation dentistry?
Sedation dentistry was developed because dentists know that many people — no matter their age — have a fear of the dentist. As someone who had a less-than-ideal dental experience with her own son, Dr. Cat knows that not all dental treatment is comfortable or welcome. So, in addition to striving to always meet her patients with warmth, she also offers sedation dentistry.
Sedation dentistry offers a medical way to help your child relax at the dentist. Whether he or she would benefit from mild sedation during a simple tooth cleaning or general anesthesia for a major procedure, Dr. Cat & the Tooth Pediatric Dentistry can help. As sedation dentistry specialists, they can safely administer the sedation needed to help your child relax at the dentist and stop dreading upcoming appointments.
How does sedation dentistry work?
Sedation dentistry can be customized to you and your child’s wants and needs. Dr. Cat can use different types of sedation, and different levels of each, to tailor the experience so your child is just sedated enough to feel relaxed without any additional, unnecessary exposure.
What are the different types of sedation available?
There are a number of different types of sedation available. Some of the different types of sedation Dr. Cat can offer include:
Nitrous oxide
Commonly known as laughing gas, this sedative can help your child feel calm and happy during his or her visit to the dentist. The nitrous oxide is simply inhaled through an oxygen mask. Your child will be awake the whole time and the sedation will wear off quickly after the appointment.
IV sedation
If your child prefers a greater level of sedation, intravenous (IV) sedation goes to work quickly and will render him or her drowsy and largely unaware of the appointment. Dr. Cat will be able to continuously adjust the level of sedation to keep your child relaxed.
General anesthesia
You want to protect your child from trauma. Dr. Cat knows that major dental procedures can be unpleasant for kids. She offers general anesthesia, effectively putting your child to sleep during the procedure, to ensure comfort and protect him or her from any unwelcoming memories of the appointment.
